I too do not believe in Hollywood-style weres. Though I've done so much delving into historical Were knowledge to know that I will never consider myself one. Even though I am a Therianthrope.
True they are Therianthrope animals, no matter what name we use..
But are we the same as those people who claim to be infected with Were- demeanours and traits that are so prominent in history?
I mean... Were- to me, will always be a term for Killers who claim to inhibit animal minds and traits when they kill. Because they are people who are wrong in the head, and either use their animal side as an excuse to commit evil, or truly suffer it like a disease. Can you give me a historical account of a Werewolf in History that was entirely good? Or didn't kill people? It's a shame that the name Werewolf can be associated with these people, but it is.
And most, if not all, of them claimed to have no control over what they become. Though they do not physically shift.
So, I suppose my question to you is, If you want to be a Were, or believe you are one inside, Are you like the rest of the Weres in History? The nomads and the killers, and the few lost souls?
Or are you more like a Therianthrope wolf? Who exist as people today, with animal souls, and will return to being what they were before? These people are the Native Americans, the Egyptians, the cultures who believe in animal souls being reincarnated as humans, and in shapeshifting. Etc.
I Wholeheartedly agree that people have confused and dramaticised the History of Therianthropes and Weres, and merged them into one. Back when man feared the wolf, man who claimed to become the wolf must have been a terrifying thought. I just dont think anyone should use the Werewolf term, because of how much deep routed hatred and evil it has inspired over the centuries, and how many lives were lost because of it. To me the name just feels.. tainted, by bad thoughts and wrongdoings.
And yes I believe it is possible to Shapeshift. But not for humans on earth (unless i'm ever proven wrong). Because the human genetic makeup is not stable enough to support such a dramatic change, though that would be incredible. Maybe elsewhere in the universe human-like animals are able to do that, and I believe most Therianthropes came from other places where Shapeshifting was indeed possible.
I dont quite think this world is as Magically Dramatic as it seems, if it ever was, it's a very quiet place today.
And again!! I'm sorry this is so long, could have fit that into a Journal.

Remember not to confuse Weres with other Therian beings, like Anubis. Fenrir. Anubis is only overseer of the dead and preparer for the afterlife Journey, (Osiris is Lord of the Dead) and he is a jackal headed human, (an anthropomorphic being, so they say.) with the ability to take the form of Wepwawet at will. Fenrir of course, was just a servant of Norse myth, a giant wolf who did his masters bidding. Long before the time of Werewolves of course.
And yes, Native American stories are littered with those tales. But they are men/women who's animal totems/souls have changed them into becoming the animal they are inside. Hardly fitting for the name Werewolf really, because other totem/soul animals exist. And you don't get Were-eagles do you? Or Were-bears?
I believe Were creatures are entirely different. ^^

Its all to do with whether it is a spiritual connection to animals you have, a physical one, or a fantastical one, as to whether you are an Anthro artist, a Therian-type, or a Furry. If you want definitions, there are definitions, thats pretty much a fact. Sometimes people just blur the whole lot and misunderstand it, all over the place, fact has become opinion and vice versa. That is why most Animal people/Artists I meet are so confused as to what they belong to, they have read so much controversy on different sites, from people who contradict each other.
It makes it easier to Categorise who is what, and Why, to say that they either fit into Therianthrope or Otherkin, boring old human, or standard animal.
So I'm sorry to tell you, its the other way round..
You're either Therianthrope or Otherkin, If you aren't just plain human or animal.
If you want to be a 'Werewolf, and think thats a viable name for yourself, You're in the Therianthrope Category. Just dont expect alot of people to take you seriously? I guess. There's too much stupidity and darkness surrounding that name.
After all, loup garou means the same thing, yet isn't ridiculed as much as Werewolf.
And I don't believe that the pictures of bigfoot, loch ness, and the yeti are real,
If they are real creatures, the pictures certainly aren't.
